Chioma Akamelu and African women

A mixed media painting of Chioma Akamelu, a Nigerian-South African girl and 11 years old. She titled her painting 'face to Face with African women'. she made use of Newspaper, beads and acrylic on a straw board to achieve her creative venture. Chioma created 2 maps of Africa and conceptualized it into female figures. She used newspaper to cover the surface of the straw-board and at the upper part of the maps are cut out fabrics of ankara of different colours which is pasted in form of collage. while the faces are made of red and golden tiny beads, the female figures wore beautiful ear accessories to compliment their head gear. at the background of the painting are motifs made of triangular shapes. This artistic rendition bring to mind bead painting of great Nigerian artist like Jimoh Buraimoh. The young artist depicted African women as beautiful and culture persons.

ART IS LIFE

The purpose of art is washing away the dust of daily life off our souls

Ayomikuns' face painting 'UJU'

The acrylic painting of Ayomikun is titled ‘UJU’. The painting was done on a full imperial cardboard. This depicts a picture of little girl with layers of multiple colour on her face. 'UJU' is an expression of a little girl whose attempt of facial make up looks awkward. However, the painterly representation of Ayomikun suggests the fashion craze little kids borrow from their environment. The artist made use of complimentary colours of orange and blue scheme with orange as the dominant colour. The summary of this visual expression is “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. While women place emphasis on their facial expression, it is imperative to note that lack of good character cannot make a woman beautiful no matter how expensive these beauty supplements are. ‘UJU’ emphasizes good character as a required make up for human acceptance and eternal remembrance. “Iwa lewa!” Beauty attracts men to women but bad character retracts! Beauty fades like a rose flower caught in autumn. Thus, ‘UJU’ serves a socio-commentary purpose. The 9 year old Ayomikun will not stop painting, expressing her creative ingenuity.
